♕ Make Up Look ~ Butterfly ♕{Inspired by _claudiayvette}

Today I'm going to show you a very challenging, artistic look - where I turned my lids into teal butterflies ♥ It's probably the hardest and most complicated look I've ever done so far: it took me ages to complete, and I almost gave up at some point. But, with a little bit of persistence and tons of patience, I managed to successfully completing it!

This look is inspired by an amazing artist, @_claudiayvette on Instagram. I saw this butterfly-like eye look months ago (via another artist, @giuliannaa), and wanted to try it since then... But I missed one key product: a proper eyeliner. At the time I was still using my handmade liner (black pigment mixed with fix +) which worked nicely as eyeliner but wouldn't work for such an intricate design. Since it wasn't no transfer, the thin lines on the lid would mess up in a blink. Literally.
So I put this look aside, while waiting to get a proper liner. When I got Trooper I realized it was THE eyeliner - I tested it with several graphic looks, and it never disappointed me so far. Finally, one day, I decided to try this look. I don't exaggerate when I say that this look took me three hours - and that at some point I thought I wasn't going to make it. It was extremely difficult and challenging - yet totally worth it! I'm still amazed by the end result *__*

The first I did, after applying eye primer, was sketching the butterfly design and this was the trickiest and most time-consuming part. I used KVD Tattoo Liner in Trooper: firstly I did a sort of thin winged line, extending the wing a lot - then I worked on the "wavy" shape, moving backwards till I reached the inner corner. Lastly, I added the fine lines on the lid that create the inner shapes - and at this point I almost gave up, because the overall design felt wrong and messy. I kept at it though, working on the lines and shape until they looked good. (I should probably list 'stubbornness' among the products used for this look XD)
Although it was easy to describe, this process alone required almost one full hour.

At this pointed I added the eyeshadows. They're all by Makeup Geek Cosmetics: Shore Thing (the lightest green), Dragonfly (the brightest) and Shark Bait (the darker teal). I created each gradient separately for each section, starting with the palest shade and then adding the other two. It required a lot of "wax on, wax off", it's hard to achieve a perfect blended result in such tiny areas.
When I was happy with the gradients (like, one hour later), I defined the butterfly design: I filled in all the lines, worked on the small details and adjusted some areas where needed.
On the lower lid I used the same shades: Shark Bait first, then I blended it with Dragonfly and lastly I used Shore Thing as transition shade. On my lash line, as usual, I applied Nocturne by NABLA.

Now the final touches. Using a white matte pigment mixed with some drops of Fix + I added the white details and dots; I applied Antique White on my brow bone and one of NABLA's highlighters (Angel) on my inner corner (carefully, trying not to mess up the design); just for fun, I added some glitters on my lower lid - Splash by GlitterTubes.
Lastly, I applied a black eyepencil on my lower waterline, false lashes and mascara.

♕ Make Up Look ~ Glittery Rainbow Eyes & Lips ♕

June is, internationally, Pride month and thus I decided to make a rainbow look - just like I did last year, when I made a quite simple yet cute rainbow liner look. You can see that look here - sadly I didn't post it on time during last June, but I was determined to post this year's one during June. Looks like I made it - barely, since June is almost over, but I made it XD I had to change the posting schedule actually, because I had a couple of different posts planned to go up before this one... Then I realized that it's almost the end of the month - so I decided to move it up!

This year's rainbow makeup is veeery different from last year's; at the beginning, I thought about re-doing the rainbow liner, because it looked so cool - and I thought I might use glitters as a twist. Then I decided to do something completely different - as you can see - while keeping the same rainbow pattern I used last year (aka starting with red on the inner corner and ending with violet on the outer).

While I kept the upper lid shape really neat and precise, on the lower lid I tried the famous 'glitter tears' effect - which I loved, I plan to use it again in one of my upcoming looks.

The first big step to create this look was create the rainbow base and guide for the later glitter application - as always, I used several eyeshadows to do so. So, after priming my lids, I started off by applying a red shadow on my inner corner - Fahrenheit by NABLA Cosmetics. The eyeshadows sequence is the following: Lazy Days by NABLA Cosmetics,  a discontinued pale yellow pigment next to it, loose eyeshadow in Jade Pearl by NYX Cosmetics, Poolside by Makeup Geek Cosmetics, Baltic by NABLA and lastly Fashion Addict by MUG. The key for achieving a smooth rainbow effect is to carefully blend each shade into the previous & next one. I did this on both my upper and lower lid - and, as I said previously, I kept the upper lid shape very neat, but I blended all the eyeshadows downwards on the lower lid.

Before moving on to the glitters application, I applied my brow bone shade (Antique White) and a touch of highlighter on my inner corners (I used one of NABLA's highlighter, Baby Glow).
Now the fun part: glitters, glitters and more glitters! They're all by GlitterTubes and the sequence is: Darling, Fireball, Brassic (which is a pure gold shade, unfortunately I don't own yellow glitters), Minted, Aquatic, Sonic and Chewee. Must say, I was quite afraid that Brassic, a gold and not yellow, could ruin the whole ensemble. Luckily, it worked out - sure, a real yellow would be more appropriate, but gold can be a sostitute. (Anyway, note to self: get a proper yellow eyeshadow AND some yellow glitters asap XD)
As for the eyeshadows, I tried to blend each shade of glitter with the previous and following one... Easier said than done, as you can see some are more blended than others. I need to practice on that!
Instead, the glitter tears effect was pretty easy to achieve. I just used the leftovers on the brushes with a downwards move. Easy-peasy.
At this point the look was almost complete: I added winged liner (using Tattoo Liner in Trooper by KVD), false lashes (Wispies by Ardel) and applied mascara (Le Film Noir by NABLA).

When I was done with the eye look I thought I could do glittery rainbow lips too! It was the perfect occasion for a matchy matchy lip art ;D
Unlike the eye makeup, where I used eyeshadows and pigments to create the base rainbow, on my lips I used several lip and eye pencil (depending on the shade). The glitters used were exactly the same, though: Darling, Fireball, Brassic, Minted, Aquatic, Sonic and Chewee ( but this time I used lash glue). Easier and quicker to make compared to the eye look, in case you're wondering XD

♕ Spring 2017 Most Played ♕

Today's is summer solstice aka summer is officially here! Although it has already been feeling like summer since the end of May XD The beach season has begun - or, in my case, the mermaid season... But today I'm going to look back on this past spring - as it's time to wrap up the Spring Most Played and see what I've used the most during these past three months!

As always, all credits for the Most Played idea go to GoldenVi0let ♥

Let's start with a big new entry in my stash that has become a holy grail almost instantaneously. Last April, Kat Von D has finally launched her beauty brand in Italy, which is now available at Sephora (both online and in the shops)... And, among other things, there was one product I wanted to try (I even mentioned it in my Prodotti Prova post): the well-know and much praised Tattoo Liner in "Trooper".
O-M-G. I don't know how to express how much I love this eyeliner. Basically, it's my dream liner. I love everything about it, I've been using it non-stop since day 1 and I think I couldn't live without it.
I'm working on a blog post about this beauty , so stay tuned!

Here's another huge and much loved new entry in my stash. Thanks to a lovely friend, I'm the proud possessor of 16 pressed glitter by GlitterTubes. I'm sure you have noticed them, I've been using them in every single look since I got them, about one month and a half ago.

From top to bottom, left to right:
Minted, Emerald, Splash, Droplets;
Twinkle, Aquatic, Skinny Dip, Dory;
Sonic, Delicate, Fairy, Chewee;
Brassic, Crown, Darling, Fireball

I'm seriously addicted to these glitters! Cannot wait to get more, although I already own a bunch. Being pressed, they're easier to use - most of the times I don't even need the glitter glue. If you want to read more, I highly recommend to check out my overview/haul post!

Here are some of the many, many makeup looks I made using these glitters!

Sunlight Double Cut Crease Tiny Heart Liner Ocean Waves

Makeup Geek Cosmetics eyeshadows: I'm not going to focus that much on them, since there's no new entry (sigh! I need to get more, they're SO good!). In the following picture you can see all the shades I own, I've been using them all equally - especially the matte ones. The quality is amazing, great colour payoff - plus they're so easy to blend. You can read my overview post here

NABLA Cosmetics eyeshadows: here's my "spring palette", featuring my most used shades by this brand. All long time favourites, basically! *_* (I actually got a couple of new shadows, but since it's a very recent purchase I'll feature them in the Summer Most Played).

Here are some of my most recent makeup looks I made with NABLA eyeshadows.

Mermaids & Unicorns Curved Liner 2.0 Floating Liner

Let's see some more long time favourites!

Shade&Glow in Angel, "Baby Glow" and "Gotham" by NABLA Cosmetics: my go-to products to highlight and contour my face - although I've been using Angel and Baby Glow as eyeshadows too, to highlight my inner corners. I still regret not buying Jasmine, the third highlighter, need to fill this gap.

Dazzle Liner in "Klimt" by NABLA Cosmetics (Goldust Collection, limited edition - here's its dedicated post!): told you it would have been featured in future most played XD I'm still obsessed with it - and disappointed that it's a limited edition, once again (although it's still available). Shame on your cow Nabla, Klimt deserved to be permanent!

My most used lipstick was/is Alter Ego by NABLA Cosmetics: I try to use all my Diva Crimes alternately - but the one I keep reaching for (no matter the occasion or the season) is Alter Ego.
Here's a lip art I made for fun, I used Alter Ego and Klimt ♥

Last but not least, blushes. Just like the lipsticks, I have four Blossom Blushes by NABLA (Kendra, Impulse, Beloved and Daisy) and I do my best to use them alternately... But the one that stole my heart one year ago and still holds a special place in my heart is Impulse
I've been also using a lot a blush by Mulac Cosmetics in the shade "Ariel" (it was a present and yes, it was chosen because of its name XD). It's a strong colour - meaning, extremely pigmented - so I had to get used to it... At the beginning I was so afraid to overdo... That I always ended up not applying enough XD. Now I got it though, and I really like this product!

That's it for my spring most played/used/loved products! ♥
Any products in common?
What products did you use the most during this past spring?

♕ Make Up Look ~ Mermaids & Unicorns ♕

Today's look was inspired by a lovely friend of mine, Shelina, who did a bright purple and teal look with tons of glitters a couple of weeks back. I instantly fell in love with the whole look - the glitters, the colour combination, the style, everything... So when I had the chance I tried it right away!
The title itself is a reference to Shelina's look - she called it "Unicorns", I of course added "Mermaids" XD I think it's quite fitting, because it features both unicorn-ish shade such as purple and pink, plus mermaid colours like teal and bright blue! ♥

This makeup is quite dramatic, but also quite easy. The trickiest part is probably the two-coloured blending, because the two shades must blend in each other without actually mixing, if you know what I mean. Apart from that, it's very simple and fairly quick to make.
Shelina's version featured teal/green glitters, but I went for bright blue glitters because... It was the closest shade I had. The green glitters I own were either too pale, too bright or too dark... So I had no choice but use blue ones, and I selected this particular shade (Dory) because it was so mermaid-ish and I thought it would get along with the purple and pink colours pretty well. And it did! :D

After priming my lids I started off by creating the two-coloured crease blending. I used Shark Bait eyeshadow by Makeup Geek Cosmetics first, and I applied it starting from the inner corner and blending it upwards and outwards, until I reached the outer corner; then I did the same with Mimesis by NABLA Cosmetics (which I also applied on my lower lid), making sure it didn't overwhelm the teal blending. It needed a little bit of "wax on, wax off" to achieve the perfect level of blending, but it was worth it. Following Shelina's design, I created a V shape on the outer corner. As transition shade I used another MUG eyeshadow, Shore Thing.
On the upper lid I applied Calypso by NABLA, serving as base for the glitters. I didn't blend it too much into Mimesis, I created a quite a neat, round shade shape. The glitter shade I used is called Delicate and is by GlitterTubes.

Then I worked on the bright blue details: first I applied a foiled shadow by MUG (Pegasus) on the tear duct area and on the outer corner, right below Mimesis. Then I applied Dory glitters (again by GlitterTubes) on both areas - no glue on the inner corner, but I used some lash glue on the outer corner detail since it consisted in a quite precise line. At this point I was done with most of the eyeshadows: I applied Antique White on my brow bone and I used Nocturne to define my lower lashline.
I then applied eyeliner - nothing crazy/graphical this time, just a good old winged line - and of course I used Trooper (Tattoo Liner by KVD). Final touches, as always, are black eyepencil, false lashes and mascara!

What I'm Not Buying: Jaclyn Hill X Morphe Palette

Jaclyn Hill teamed up with Morphe for yet another collaboration—the Jaclyn Hill X Morphe Palette.

And I won't be buying.

This is an odd post because I feel like most consumers are going to be grouped in one of two groups:
  • Those who love Jaclyn Hill and will buy anything she had a hand in creating
  • Those who aren't tempted by this palette at all

I belong to the second group.

And I feel like this is an odd post because I don't think the majority of people are going to be evaluating whether they should buy this palette or not or if they think this will be a good buy for their money. I think most people will probably have already made up their minds on if they will be buying or not.

For some background, Jaclyn Hill is an incredibly popular person who makes beauty videos on YouTube. She has collaborated on several products, most notably with Becca and Morphe. Morphe released the "Jaclyn Hill Favorites" palette a few years ago, which was a selection of Jaclyn's favorite shadows from Morphe's collection:

This newest palette, according to Jaclyn, took two years to make and has a brand new formula, so it is supposedly different from all other Morphe palettes and shadows.

The palette has been teased for months (maybe even a year), and the release date kept getting pushed back. The palette was leaked earlier this year when a photo of a cake commissioned for a celebratory party surfaced:

But Jaclyn insisted the palette looked different from the cake.

When photo of the palette released, it was obvious that it was the same as the cake (down to the message on the lid).

I personally think it's pretty terrible when people's work is leaked for the sake of hype and attention, and while I think Jacklyn lied by saying it was not the same, I can understand how much it must have sucked to work on a project and have the first reveal be from a damn cake.

To be completely honest, this palette does not interest me at all, and despite the fact that it has a "new formula," I think this palette is a complete ripoff.

Let me explain.

This palette has 35 shadows, like most other Morphe palettes. And Morphe palettes with 35 shadows typically cost $23.

This palette costs $38, which is a considerable increase. And, here's the thing. Morphe wants consumers to think that this palette is $15 more expensive because of this supposed "new formula," but the reality is that the $15 price increase is the "collaborating with Jaclyn Hill" fee.

I've explained this many times before, but when brands collaborate with someone, they are selling the product in large part because of the name attached. Therefore, the name attached will earn a nice percentage of the profits. In these cases, brands have two options if they don't want to sacrifice on the profits they would normally earn without the collaborator. They can:

Lower the quality of the product so that it is cheaper to make but keep the price the same

Or

Charge more.

It looks like Morphe chose the second option.

But, wait, there's more. Morphe shipping rates are very high, especially considering how light the products are and that if the product comes broken and the buyer did not request to spend extra money on shipping to insure it, they will not replace the item.

With shipping, the Jacklyn Hill X Morphe palette costs around $48 in the US, meaning that it is considerably higher for international customers.

That is insane to me, especially considering that this is a Morphe palette.

I have owned two Morphe palettes: 35T and 35OS. There is a store in NYC that sells Morphe palettes and allows you to swatch in store, so I purchased my palettes there. When I swatched in store, I was impressed with the shimmers (for the price), but as I've said before, it is really easy to make a shimmer that looks good swatched. I ended up decluttering the 35T and most of the 35OS. There are a few shadows from that palette that remain in my collection that I depotted and put in a custom palette.

I am not a fan of Morphe. I don't like their business practices, I don't like some of the people they associate with, and I don't like their products. I think the quality of their shadows is quite poor, especially the matte shadows. Now, I understand the shadows in the Jaclyn Hill palette have been reformulated, and I think it's great that some reviews have said that the mattes are, for the most part, pretty okay. But, I highly, highly doubt that the mattes are as good as (or better than) ones that I have from Makeup Geek, Anastasia Beverly Hills, Kat Von D, Melt Cosmetics, Viseart, or even those in my Milani Earthly Elements palette.

In terms of swatches, most that have surfaced from Jaclyn look like this:

The colors look like they pack a lot of pigment, which is something that I have found with a lot of Morphe shimmers. But I think it is also evident that the colors have been pressed incredibly hard into the skin. Looking at the brush in the second photo, for example, that is much, much more pressure than I would ever use on my eye.

These swatches from Samantha Ravndahl look what I consider a little more true to life:

(Each color has been swatched twice. On the left, it is a finger swatch; on the right, a brush swatch.)

You can watch Samantha Ravndahl's review video here

Apparently Jaclyn recommends applying some of these shadows with a finger, which is not surprising considering the pigmentation in the above photos. A lot of foiled/metallic shadows apply better with a finger. I have some shadows by Natasha Denona that look like complete crap when applied with a brush and incredible applied with my finger. However, on the whole, I think most people would like a shadow to perform well with a brush.

Let's look at the colors:

From my understanding, this is supposed to be Jaclyn's ultimate palette, or something like that. It's not meant to be an innovator or on trend or anything like that. It is literally just what her ideal custom palette would look like.

And when I think about it like that, I realize that this palette looks a lot like all of my custom palettes as well, meaning I already have all these colors.

Here are some of mine:

(I have two others that are all round pans, but I am still recovering from surgery and cannot stand long enough to take photographs of them.)

Let's look at the Jaclyn Hill X Morphe palette as just pigments:

Do you know what I see here? A whole lot of colors that look either the same or very similar. This is something that I find happens in a lot of Morphe palettes. Take the 35O for example:

This palette was SO hyped, in large part because of Jaclyn Hill, and for the exception of the last two columns, this palette just looks like a whole lot of browns to me that won't look all that different on the eye. That's the reason I decluttered the majority of the colors from the all-shimmer version of this palette: so many of them were duplicated in the palette.

And, here's the thing. The Jaclyn Hill palette will be so hyped—it's already so hyped. And it will likely sell out. Or the Morphe website will crash. Or something like that. And that's because Jaclyn has a huge following of (primarily young and impressionable) viewers, I don't think it matters if the quality is meh, the colors are repetitive and generic, or if it is overpriced. People will buy this because it has Jaclyn's name attached to it.

But for nearly $50, there are so many better palettes one could buy, like everyone's favorite: ABH Modern Renaissance:

Or Juvia's Place Masquerade:

I don't fit the targeted demographic of this palette, and this is an easy pass for me. I have all of these colors somewhere in my collection, and I certainly don't need or want a huge Morphe palette with all of them. So, I won't be buying.
